US President Donald Rumsfeld stressed Monday that the security threats faced by his country in Afghanistan were huge, and he enslaved a quick withdrawal from there, while neighboring Pakistan was accused of harboring terrorists.
In
a speech to the American people, Turomb said the rapid withdrawal from
Afghanistan would leave a vacuum for terrorists and vowed to expand the
powers of field commanders to "fight terrorism and combat chaos."
The
US president has justified his new stance that he aims to prevent
Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for those who have been called
Islamic militants who are determined to attack the United States.
"My
original intuition is pushing me to withdraw," he said, but he added
that his national security advisor persuaded him to strengthen the US
ability to prevent the Taliban from toppling the Kabul government.
While
acknowledging the magnitude of security threats and the frustration of
the American people over the consequences of the war, he stressed that
"the signs of victory are visible to us after 16 years of the Sept. 11
attacks."
The US President vowed to continue supporting the Afghan government, but said the support was not a blank cheque.
He will not talk about the numbers of troops or plans for his country's military activity in Afghanistan in the future, he said.
But
Fox News quoted a senior official as reporting that he had already
agreed to send 4,000 troops to Afghanistan to join some 8400 US troops
present there.
Military
officials stressed that the deployment of some 3,900 additional troops
might prevent the Taliban from consolidating their recent field gains.
In
the same vein, he accused Pakistan of harboring terrorists who are
being respected by the United States, saying "this will not continue."
He
stressed that the United States could not remain in a state of
insecurity over safe havens for terrorist organizations, "and the
Taliban and other groups in Pakistan pose a threat to the region."
He
stressed the need for us partners to make more effort and money to
fight terrorism, saying that these killers should know that they cannot
hide anywhere.
